🇮🇹 The Beauty and History of Capri

“Capri” —some claim it hails from the Greek "Kapros" (wild boar), while others trace it to the Latin "Capreae" (goats).

Capri gained prominence in the Roman Empire’s political and military spheres when Ottaviano, later Augustus, arrived in 29 BC. Struck by the island's beauty, Ottaviano took it from Naples in exchange for Ischia, a pivotal move that marked its significance.

Emperor Tiberius made Capri his residence for a decade, orchestrating imperial affairs from its shores. This influential imperial presence shaped the island's architecture and urban development.

Roman engineering prowess manifested in the construction of a port, intricate drainage systems, water storage facilities, farms, dwellings, and a collection of twelve Imperial villas meticulously cataloged in the 19th century by historian Rosario Mangoni. Prominent relics from this era include Villa Jovis, Villa Palazzo a Mare, and Villa Damecuta, emblematic of Capri's Roman heritage.

During the later half of the 19th century, Capri became a popular resort for European artists, writers and other celebrities.

Artists and writers seeking inspiration gravitated to the island. Hotel Pagano welcomed Augustus Kopisch, setting the stage for Capri to become a literary haven. It wasn't until the exodus of Russian intellectuals that the island bloomed as a refuge, hosting luminaries like Maxim Gorki and writers like Axel Munthe and Edwin Cerio.

During the 19th century, Capri welcomed artists, particularly German Bohemians. Later, the Quisisana opened its doors to royalty, aristocrats, politicians, and industrialists, expanding the island's hospitality. Among its guests were notable figures like Massimo Gorkij, Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, and Axel Munthe, who found inspiration for their work on the island. By the 1950s, Capri evolved into the hub of high society, hosting lavish events.

Today, it remains a coveted destination for global tourists seeking both fleeting visits and extended stays, with its Piazzetta offering a chance to escape anonymity.

The island's secluded corners still attract artists and inspire their creative works.
